COMPANY HISTORY
By Lynne Dodson, third
generation owner of DBS.
Meet my grandmother, Dorothy
Biddle, for many years the best known flower
arranger in America. After learning how
difficult it was to find flower arranging supplies
in many of the 47 states where she lectured, she and
my father, Rod Johnson, started Dorothy Biddle
service in 1936.
Some popular book titles
(still available on Ebay, oddly enough!) written
by Dorothy include How to Arrange Flowers,
Making Corsages at Home, Flower
Show Themes, Christmas Ideas, and
The Book of Table Setting.
By the mid-1960's, Dorothy
Biddle (Mrs. Walter Adams Johnson) was fully retired
and my dad, Rod Johnson (at right) had
taken the helm. But DBS continued to grow as each
generation had the same need for good tools and
supplies. We were also supplying garden centers,
gift shops and florists with our products. About
that time, I began working at DBS after school and
summers, and then after years of college and a 'real
job', I returned to DBS in 1973 as office manager..
In 1981, DBS moved here to the
Pocono Mountains, to a larger and more efficient
building. My husband Chuck and three children,
Matthew, Michael and Elizabeth have all helped out
when needed over the years. Back in July 1986 my dad
officially retired...he passed away in May of 2008.
As the current owner of Dorothy Biddle Service, my
goal is to continue supplying retailers with not
only flower arranging equipment but unique, useful
supplies and accessories for indoor and outdoor
gardeners.
Pictured above is my family sitting atop
Sunset Rock on a rare whole-family camping trip, which is
something we hadn't done in many years, since the kids were
small. From left to right are my son Michael, my son Matt,
my husband Chuck, me, and my daughter Liz.
